AirPods Max not charging? Causes and fixes | Blue Apple Amsterdam

Battery stuck at 0% or 1% on your AirPods Max? We explain what could be wrong and how to fix it.

AirPods Max not charging — the most reported complaint

"My AirPods Max won't charge" is by far the most common question we get about this model. Sometimes the battery percentage stays stuck at 0% or 1%, sometimes the headphones only work while the cable is connected and cut out the moment you unplug it. Below we go through the possible causes step by step, from the simplest to the most serious.

Cause 1: non-certified cable

The AirPods Max checks whether a connected cable is genuinely from Apple (or MFi-certified). Cheap cables that look like the original but fail this authentication simply won't charge the headphones — even if the connector fits perfectly. Always test first with a genuine Apple cable.

Cause 2: insufficient charger output

The AirPods Max needs at least 5V/1A to start charging. Old laptop USB ports, cheap multi-port chargers, and car adapters often can't deliver this reliably. Result: the charging light briefly flickers on and off again, or never starts at all. Always plug the cable directly into a wall outlet using an adapter of at least 20W.

Cause 3: debris in the charging port

Dust, lint, or skin oil can build up in the charging port and block the contact. Inspect the port with a flashlight and gently remove any debris with a dry, soft brush — never use a needle or other metal object, as this can damage the pins.

Cause 4: deep discharge (battery at 0%)

If the battery is completely drained, it can take 15 to 30 minutes after connecting the charger before any light appears at all. This is normal and not a reason to panic — just leave the headphones connected without interruption.

Cause 5: worn or failed battery

Did none of the steps above work, even after 30 minutes with a confirmed-working cable and adapter? Then the battery itself is most likely the problem. We see this often with AirPods Max that are more than 2-3 years old and used daily. A telltale sign: the headphones only work while the cable is plugged in, and cut out immediately when you unplug it.
