AirPods Max won't turn on? Causes, fixes & repair in Amsterdam

AirPods Max completely unresponsive — what now?

You put on your AirPods Max, but nothing happens: no status LED, no sound when powering on, and your iPhone doesn't see the headphones in the Bluetooth list. This is one of the most commonly reported AirPods Max issues, and fortunately the cause is often simple to fix. In this article we'll walk through what you can try yourself, and when it's time to bring your headphones to Blue Apple in Amsterdam Zuid.

Most common causes of an AirPods Max that won't turn on

  • Battery fully drained (deep discharge protection). If the AirPods Max have been unused for a long time, the battery can enter a protection mode. No LED appears, even while charging — sometimes for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Dust or lint in the charging port / Smart Case. Dust and lint frequently block the contact between the Lightning or USB-C cable and the headphones.
  • Faulty cable or adapter. Non-certified cables or underpowered chargers (less than 5V/1A) often don't deliver enough current to start up.
  • Internal fault in the power board or headband flex cable. On older or heavily used units, the thin flex cables inside the headband can come loose or get damaged, cutting power to the headphones.
  • Completely failed battery. After a few years, the battery itself can fail and stop holding a charge.

What to try yourself first

  1. Connect the AirPods Max to an original or MFi-certified cable and a 20W (or higher) adapter, plugged directly into a wall outlet (not a USB hub or power bank).
  2. Leave the headphones charging uninterrupted for at least 30 minutes without touching any buttons — after a deep discharge, the charging light can take a while to appear.
  3. Check the charging port with a flashlight for dust or lint and gently remove it with a soft, dry brush (never metal).
  4. Reset the AirPods Max: hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown together for 15 seconds until the LED flashes amber and then white.
  5. Test the same cable and adapter on another Apple device to rule out a faulty charger.

If the AirPods Max still show zero signs of life after 30 minutes on a confirmed-working cable and adapter, there's almost always a hardware issue at play — usually the battery, the charging port, or a loose headband flex cable.
