Rule things out first, replace later
A port that stops charging is surprisingly often not faulty. Lint from your pocket or bag gets pressed further in by the connector until there is a solid plug at the bottom, so the cable can no longer seat deep enough. Just as often the problem is a worn cable or adapter with bent or flattened contacts. So we test first with a cable and charger we know are good, and inspect the port under the microscope. If the port itself is done for, we replace it: on some models that is a separate flex cable, on others it is soldered to the board and becomes soldering work.
Frequently asked questions about AirPods charging port repair
Could it be my cable or charger?
Regularly, yes. Cables fail at the strain relief and adapters deliver less current after a few years. Bring your own cable and charger along when you come by and we can compare them against a known good set on the spot. If that is where the fault is, you do not need a repair at all.
Does the port always have to be replaced?
No. If there is nothing but a plug of lint and dirt in it, we clean the port out and that is the end of it. The diagnosis is free and puts you under no obligation, so you can find out at no risk whether cleaning is all it takes.
My device reports liquid in the connector.
That warning comes from the sensor inside the port and means there is liquid or corrosion in there. Do not keep charging with a cable, because that makes the corrosion worse. Bring the device in: we clean the port out and measure whether the contacts are still sound.
How long does a charging port repair take?
On a phone it is usually a job of around 30 minutes, so while you wait. If the port is soldered to the board, or the device is a MacBook or laptop, it becomes workshop work and you should count on one to two working days.
