Why a back cover is more work than it looks

From outside it looks like a sheet of glass; inside it is the load-bearing layer of the device. On glass backs the panel is bonded to the frame with strong adhesive and has to be released piece by piece with heat and controlled pressure, without touching the antennas and the wireless charging coil. Those often sit right against it and are carried over to the new back. On a laptop it is the bottom case or display housing: screws rather than glue, but with cables underneath. One thing we say up front: a device that has been opened is never sealed quite as well as it was from the factory.

From a moto g to a razr

The Motorola range runs from straightforward moto g handsets to the razr, and those are two different kinds of repair. On the g and edge models the work is comparable to any other Android phone and we hold the common parts in stock. A razr is another matter: the inner screen is a folding panel with a hinge underneath, which is dearer and more involved than a flat display. If there is a line or a dead band along the crease of your razr, come in for a free diagnosis. We will tell you honestly whether the screen can still be saved, and what it costs, before you decide anything.

Frequently asked questions about Motorola back cover replacement

Is a cracked back cover really a problem?

It is more than cosmetic. Moisture and dust reach the electronics through the crack, splinters come loose in your hand or your bag, and on glass backs a split tends to run further the next time the device knocks against something. Replacing it early is simpler than replacing it late.

Will wireless charging still work afterwards?

On models that support wireless charging the coil sits behind the back cover and we carry it over. We check that wireless charging still works after the repair before you take the device home.

Can just the glass be replaced, or does the whole housing come out?

That varies by model. On one device the back is a separate panel, on another the glass is part of the frame and in practice you replace the entire housing. The free diagnosis makes clear which category your model falls into, and only then do we agree a price.

How long does it take?

Releasing the panel and cleaning off the old adhesive takes time, so this is usually not a half-hour job like a screen or battery on a phone. Most of the time the device is ready the same day or the next working day; you will hear what it is for your model when you drop it off.
