As with other consoles, most of the work comes down to three things. The HDMI port gets damaged by a cable left in at an angle or yanked out, and then the picture stays black while the console otherwise boots normally. Heat is the second cause: dust in the cooler and dried-out thermal paste make the console loud and cause it to throttle or cut out. The third is a disc tray that will no longer take a disc or eject one.

Rule out the cheap causes first

We do not start at the most expensive scenario. A console that runs loud or cuts out mid-game has a cooling problem far more often than a board problem, and cleaning with fresh thermal paste is a small job that usually settles it. If the HDMI port turns out to be broken, that is better news than it sounds: the port is soldered to the board and can be replaced on its own, so no new board is needed. Because your own board stays in the console, your storage and your account stay as they are. Which of them it is, you will know after the free diagnosis, and only then do we agree a price.

Frequently asked questions about Xbox repair

My Xbox starts up but there is no picture.

That is almost always the HDMI port or the chip behind it. Try another cable and another input on the television first to rule those out. If the picture still stays away, the port is the job: it is soldered to the board and can be replaced on its own, so this does not need a new board.

My console is loud or cuts out while I play.

After a few years the cooler is packed with dust and the thermal paste has gone hard, and that produces exactly these complaints. Cleaning and fresh paste usually settle it. If the heat has already done damage on the board, that turns up when we measure it out.

The disc tray does nothing.

Usually the mechanism is worn or dirty, or the drive is giving up. That is very fixable. Bring the console in and we will establish what it is for free and tell you the price before we start.

Will my games and saves be kept?

With the repairs above the drive is left alone and everything is still there afterwards. We cannot guarantee it, especially not after liquid damage or a short circuit. If there are saves you cannot afford to lose, say so and we will take that into account during the repair.
