Why a battery goes downhill

A lithium-ion battery loses a little capacity with every charge cycle. After a few years you notice it in more than the runtime: the cell can no longer deliver peak current, so the device cuts out suddenly under a heavy app or in the cold, sometimes with a quarter of the charge apparently left. If the battery also swells, it pushes the screen loose, bulges the casing or blocks the trackpad. That is not something to sit out. Stop charging, stop using the device and bring it in, because a swollen battery can take the rest of the device down with it.

Fast charging needs a healthy port

OnePlus charges at high current through its cable and supplied adapter, which makes the charging port more important here than average. Contacts packed with lint, bent pins or corrosion will drop the phone back to slow charging or stop it charging altogether — the very complaints you would expect from a worn-out battery. So we always test with a cable and adapter we know to be good before replacing anything. Bring your own cable and charger when you come in: in plenty of cases the fault is in those, and the phone needs nothing done to it at all.
