What usually goes wrong on an action camera

Scratched or shattered lens glass is the most common job by a distance, and on most models the glass is a separate part rather than the lens itself — which is why a camera that films through a haze is usually cheap to put right. Next is water where it should not be, and that is nearly always the door: the seal hardens with age, or grit gets into the groove, and a camera rated for diving takes on water at a metre. On the pocket models with a motorised gimbal the failure is different again. If it whines, hunts for level or sits crooked at startup, that is the gimbal motor or its ribbon, not the camera. Phone gimbals like the Osmo Mobile and the Insta360 Flow have no camera of their own at all, so what we repair there is the motors, the arm and the battery. And a camera that runs for twenty minutes instead of ninety is doing what every lithium battery does after a few hundred charges.

Frequently asked questions about Action camera repair in Amsterdam

My GoPro lens is scratched — is the whole camera finished?
Usually not. On most HERO models the front glass is a replaceable part in its own right, so the camera keeps its lens and sensor and only the glass changes. Bring it in and we will tell you whether the damage stopped at the glass or reached the lens behind it.
My camera leaked and it is supposed to be waterproof.
That is almost always the door seal rather than a fault in the body. The rubber hardens over a few years and grit in the groove stops it closing properly. We replace the seal and the door, but be honest with us about how long it was wet — a camera that flooded needs the board looked at, not just a new seal.
The gimbal on my Osmo Pocket is crooked or making a noise.
That points at the gimbal motor or the flat cable running through it, which is a repair rather than a replacement. It can also be simple mechanical obstruction from sand, so cleaning is checked first — we would rather charge you for the cheaper job.
Do you repair Osmo Mobile and Insta360 Flow gimbals?
Yes, and it is worth knowing what those actually are: a phone holder with motors, so there is no lens or sensor to fail. What does fail is a motor, the folding arm, the battery or the charging port, and all four are repairable.
