Why a battery goes downhill

A lithium-ion battery loses a little capacity with every charge cycle. After a few years you notice it in more than the runtime: the cell can no longer deliver peak current, so the device cuts out suddenly under a heavy app or in the cold, sometimes with a quarter of the charge apparently left. If the battery also swells, it pushes the screen loose, bulges the casing or blocks the trackpad. That is not something to sit out. Stop charging, stop using the device and bring it in, because a swollen battery can take the rest of the device down with it.

The type number counts, not the name

Oppo releases its Find and Reno phones in variants that differ by region and that the name will not always tell apart. One variant's screen sits just wrong in another, so we start from the type number in settings or on the SIM tray. Oppo is also full of fast-charging technology, which means a charging complaint lies in the cable or the adapter at least as often as in the phone. Bring them along when you come in. Frequently asked questions about Oppo battery replacement

How do I know the battery really needs replacing?

Typical signs are sudden shutdowns, draining fast while idle, getting warm on the charger and a device that only works plugged in. We test the battery free of charge and tell you what comes out. If it turns out to be healthy, we say so and you are under no obligation.

My screen or casing is lifting, what now?

That is almost always a swollen battery. Switch the device off, unplug the charger and bring it in as soon as you can. Carrying on charging and using it makes the swelling worse, and at some point the battery damages the screen, the trackpad or the casing as well. Never puncture it yourself.

How long does it take?

On a phone usually around 30 minutes, while you wait. On a MacBook or laptop, one to two working days, because the battery is fixed into the casing there and the machine has to be closed up and tested again afterwards.

Will my data be preserved?

Yes, a battery replacement does not touch your storage and everything is still there afterwards. Do make a backup first anyway, simply because that is sensible with any device that is going to be opened.
