What each repair involves

Premium OLED — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

On almost every modern device the glass, the display panel and the touch layer are laminated into one piece at the factory, so a crack is rarely only cosmetic. Dirt and moisture travel through it to the layers underneath, which is how broken glass becomes an image full of lines or a touch layer that taps on its own a few weeks later. That is why the whole assembly is replaced rather than the glass alone.

You might notice

  • The glass is cracked
  • The screen is black but it still rings or vibrates
  • Touch does not respond, or taps by itself
  • There are green, pink or white lines across the display
  • Part of the image is missing or discoloured

What we check first

Whether the display and the touch layer are both affected or only one, whether the backlight is still working, and whether the sensors and cameras that sit behind the screen came through the impact. If the device still shows an image we check touch across the whole surface, not just the middle.

Tested before you get it back

Image across the whole display · Touch in every corner · Brightness and auto-brightness · Front camera and sensors behind the screen

Blue Apple battery — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

A lithium battery loses a little capacity with every charge cycle, and after a few years the problem is not only how long it lasts. It can no longer deliver the peak current the device asks for, so it cuts out under a heavy app or in the cold even though the percentage says otherwise. If the battery also swells it pushes against the screen or the case from the inside, and then leaving it costs you a second part.

You might notice

  • The battery drains much faster than it used to
  • It shuts down suddenly with charge left
  • It only works while plugged in
  • It gets warm while charging
  • The screen or the back is starting to lift

What we check first

The battery is measured out rather than replaced on the strength of the complaint. If it turns out to be healthy we tell you that, because a device that drains fast can also be a worn charging port or something running in the background.

Tested before you get it back

Charging from empty · Behaviour under load · The device holds a charge while idle

Power button — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

A power button is a mechanical switch pressed thousands of times, and it wears. On many devices it sits on a flex cable shared with the volume buttons and sometimes the fingerprint sensor, so what looks like one dead button can be one cable.

You might notice

  • The button needs pressing hard, or several times
  • It does nothing at all
  • It is stuck in

What we check first

Whether the button, the cable or the board is at fault, and whether the neighbouring buttons still work — that usually answers it.

Tested before you get it back

Power on and off · Wake and sleep · The volume buttons on the same cable

Digital Crown / button — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

The crown is a moving part on the outside of a sealed device, so it collects sweat, sun cream and grit — which is why stiffness is often dirt rather than failure. It also carries a seal, and anything that opens a watch means that seal has to be rebuilt.

You might notice

  • The crown does not turn, or turns without doing anything
  • It is stiff or gritty
  • The button beside it does not respond

What we check first

Whether it is debris or the mechanism, and whether liquid has got past the seal around it.

Tested before you get it back

The crown turns and clicks · The side button · Fresh sealing fitted

Water damage — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

The water is rarely what finishes a device — corrosion is. While there is voltage on a board with liquid between its layers, current flows where it should not and the traces eat themselves. That is why switching it off comes before everything else, and why charging it to see whether it still works is the worst thing you can do. Rice and a hairdryer move moisture around rather than removing it, and coffee, beer or seawater leave salt and sugar that keep working after the surface is dry. We open the device, clean the board, remove the corrosion and measure the circuits to find what has been affected. We will not promise an outcome: what can be saved depends on what went in, how long it stayed powered, and what it reached. You hear the honest odds after the free diagnosis, and if you say no it has cost you nothing.

You might notice

  • It went in water or something was spilled on it
  • It worked after drying and then stopped
  • It says there is liquid in the connector
  • It has been behaving oddly since it got wet

What we check first

How far the liquid travelled, which components show corrosion, and whether the storage is still readable. That assessment is the diagnosis, and it is free.

Tested before you get it back

Everything the liquid reached · Charging and battery behaviour · Cameras, speakers and microphones · Wi-Fi and mobile signal

Diagnosis — Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) Price on request

Working out what is actually wrong is its own job, and it is free. We measure rather than guess, because the symptom and the cause are often different things: a device that will not charge might be a port, a battery, a chip or a cable, and those are four different prices. You get the outcome and the price before anything is opened, and you are under no obligation to go ahead.

You might notice

  • Something is wrong and you do not know what
  • It has several problems at once
  • Another shop could not work it out

What we check first

Power in and where it stops, the battery, the charging path, the display chain, and anything the symptoms point at.

Before you bring it in

None of this is required — you can walk in without doing any of it. It just makes the visit shorter and, in one case, protects your device.

  1. 1 Back up if you still can, through iCloud, a computer or whatever you normally use. Most repairs leave your storage untouched, but a device that has already taken a knock is exactly the one you want a copy of.
  2. 2 Bring it charged if it still powers on. A device with some charge can be tested properly before and after the work, which saves a second visit.
  3. 3 Take off the case and any screen protector, and bring them with you rather than leaving them on.
  4. 4 If the complaint is about charging, bring your own cable and adapter. The fault is in one of those often enough that it is worth five minutes to rule them out.
  5. 5 Know your passcode, and your Apple ID or Google account details if the device asks for them. We cannot test a repair on a device nobody can unlock.
  6. 6 If liquid has been involved, switch the device off and leave it off — do not charge it to see whether it still works. Corrosion keeps going while there is voltage on the board, so every hour counts. Rice does nothing.
  7. 7 If the screen or the back is lifting, or the device no longer sits flat, stop charging it and bring it in. That is a swelling battery, and using it makes the damage spread to parts that were fine.

How the repair works

  1. 1

    Free diagnosis

We establish what is actually wrong rather than what it looks like, because a device that will not charge and a device that will not turn on often have the same cause and different fixes.

  2. 2

    Price and options first

You hear what it costs and, where there is a choice of part, what each one means, before anything is opened. If we think the repair is not worth it, we say so then.

  3. 3

    The repair

On a phone, most of the common jobs are done while you wait. A tablet, laptop, watch or console is left with us, and you are told at drop-off roughly how long it will be.

  4. 4

    Testing

The part we fitted is tested, and so is everything around it that the work could have disturbed.

  5. 5

    Collection

Come and get it, or have it collected and returned if you would rather not make the trip. Whatever we replaced carries a warranty, set out in our terms.

What we test before you get it back

Only the things the work could have affected. A list of everything on the device would look thorough and mean nothing.

  • Image across the whole display
  • Touch in every corner
  • Brightness and auto-brightness
  • Front camera and sensors behind the screen
  • Charging from empty
  • Behaviour under load
  • The device holds a charge while idle
  • Power on and off
  • Wake and sleep
  • The volume buttons on the same cable
  • The crown turns and clicks
  • The side button
  • Fresh sealing fitted
  • Everything the liquid reached
  • Charging and battery behaviour
  • Cameras, speakers and microphones
  • Wi-Fi and mobile signal
  • Nothing yet — this is the step before the repair

Repair or replace?

Repairing usually makes sense when

  • The device works apart from the one thing that is broken.
  • A single part is at fault, and it is one that comes off on its own.
  • The repair costs a fraction of a replacement.
  • You want to keep this device, and what is on it.

Worth a diagnosis before deciding when

  • Several things are wrong at once, which often means one underlying cause.
  • Liquid has been involved, because what can be saved depends on what the board looks like inside.
  • The fault is on the board, where the work is longer and the outcome is less predictable.
  • The physical damage is extensive — a bent frame or a case that no longer closes changes what is possible.

We will not tell you to repair something that is not worth repairing. On an older device with an expensive part, the honest answer is sometimes to put the money towards a replacement, and you will hear that from us.

Repairing an older device

This is an older device, and we are straight about what that means. It can still be repaired, and the common jobs are usually cheap on a model this age. But parts come from a shrinking supply, so choice is narrower than on a current model and some things take longer to source. Age itself causes faults here: batteries well past their useful life, charging ports worn out by a decade of plugging in, connectors that have loosened over time. And because a device this old is worth little, an expensive repair can cost more than the device — so for the bigger jobs the free diagnosis is the important step, and sometimes the honest advice is to put the money towards something newer. If the device is doing a specific job and doing it well, keeping it going is often the right call and we are glad to do it. Either way you hear the position before anything is opened.

Why bring a Apple Watch Series 4 (40mm) to Blue Apple

The price before the work

Your model has a price per repair on this page. Where a price cannot be known in advance — liquid damage, board-level faults — you get it after the free diagnosis, and it does not move afterwards.

Board-level repair

Most workshops swap whole assemblies and send a board fault elsewhere. We trace the fault to the component and replace that, which is cheaper and keeps your own board, and usually your own data, in the device.

A choice of part where one exists

Where more than one quality of screen or battery is available for your model, you choose, and you see the price of each before deciding.

An honest no

When a repair costs more than the device is worth, or the odds are poor, we tell you before you commit. The diagnosis is free either way.

In Amsterdam Zuid

Rijnstraat 76-H in the Rivierenbuurt, walking distance from Amsterdam RAI. Collection and return, or insured post, if you cannot come in.

The case size decides the part

On an Apple Watch the case size is not a detail but the part itself: a 41mm screen does not fit a 45mm case, not even within the same series. If you do not know your size, we will work it out with you. Beyond that, the glass is laminated to the display panel and the touch layer, so separate parts do not exist here. Watch the battery in particular: if it swells it pushes the screen off the case and you see a gap along the edge. If you notice that, take the watch off and bring it in, because from that moment the glass is no longer sealed.
