Face ID works through the TrueDepth system at the top of the screen: an infrared camera, a light that illuminates your face and a projector that places thousands of dots on it. Those parts are paired at the factory with the logic board of your phone. A new part from another iPhone therefore does not work; Face ID simply stays off. The repair is about restoring your own parts. Usually that is a flex cable damaged by a drop or liquid, or a connector that was hit during an earlier screen repair. That is precision work under the microscope, which is why we do it in the workshop rather than at the counter.
Apple pairs parts to the device, and you notice that after a repair. Fit a screen or battery that is not paired to that iPhone's serial number and iOS adds a notice about it in settings — with a battery, the battery health reading disappears as well. The phone works completely, but that notice comes with it, and it is our job to say so beforehand rather than after. Parts that are not attached to the screen itself we always transfer: the Face ID sensor stays your own sensor, so Face ID keeps working after a screen replacement. With a genuine Apple screen, True Tone stays available too.
