Replacing the keyboard on your MacBook Pro 13" M1/M2 Touch Bar A2338 (2020-2022)
A key that sticks, a letter that repeats itself or a whole row that does nothing: on a MacBook that is no small job, because the keyboard is not a separate part. It is fixed into the top case, with the battery and trackpad around it. Clicking a loose key back on sometimes works, but replacing the keyboard means taking the whole machine apart.
This model already has the more reliable scissor-switch keyboard, so failing keys here usually come from spilled liquid rather than the mechanism. Above the keys sits the Touch Bar, with Touch ID on the right: both work again after the repair, and Touch ID stays your own sensor.
Find the cause first, then replace
- One key or a whole row? One key is often dirt or a cap that came loose. If a whole row stops working, the cable or the connector on the board is more likely.
- Spilled something? Tell us, even if it was a while ago. Liquid sinks down to the membrane and the board underneath, and then we check there too.
- Does an external keyboard work? Then you know for sure it is the keyboard and not the software.
