Four causes, one diagnosis

A MacBook that will not turn on almost always has one of four causes, which is why they sit side by side in the table. The most common is a fault on the logic board: a shorted capacitor or a burnt-out power chip, often after a bad charger or a power surge. Next comes the battery, which after years can be so worn that it no longer delivers the current needed to start, or so swollen that it jams the machine. On some models it is the charging port, so no power gets in at all. And often liquid has been involved, sometimes weeks earlier, after which corrosion slowly spreads until one day the machine no longer starts. From the outside you cannot tell them apart. We measure the machine out and tell you which of the four it is.

One top case, three parts

On recent MacBooks the keyboard, trackpad and battery are riveted into the top case. Convenient for the factory; for a repair it means a single dead key could in theory cost you the whole assembly. So we work at part level where we can rather than swapping the case as a unit. The same goes for the logic board: where many workshops write a board off, we measure it out and replace the component causing the fault. If your model has a Touch ID sensor, it is paired to the board, so it keeps working through a board repair — but not through a board replacement, and we tell you that up front.
