MacBook repair in Amsterdam: how to choose a good repairer

Having a MacBook repaired is not something you do every day, and when it suddenly gives up you are usually in a hurry. That is exactly when people make the wrong choice: the first repairer who picks up, or the lowest price they see. Below is a short list of questions you can ask any repairer in Amsterdam, so that you know what you are getting before you hand over your laptop.

Blue Apple repairs MacBooks at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. Where we say 'we' below, it is about how we go about it; the questions themselves you can ask anyone.

1. Does the repairer start with a diagnosis?

A MacBook that will not turn on, a black screen or a Mac that keeps shutting down can have ten causes. A good repairer first establishes what is wrong and then tells you the options, before anything is replaced. Be careful with a fixed price over the phone for a fault you cannot describe precisely: it is often wrong. With us it starts with measuring, and only then do you hear what is needed.

2. Do you know beforehand what it costs and what is included?

Ask for the total: part, labour, testing, and what happens if the diagnosis turns out different from expected. Also ask what you pay if you decide not to have it repaired. How to compare prices fairly is covered in what a MacBook repair costs and what sets the price.

3. Which part is used?

For many repairs there are several qualities: an original part, an equivalent part or a refurbished part. The difference is in price, colour, brightness and lifespan. A good repairer explains that and lets you choose. You can see what we offer per model on the MacBook page, and for screens the difference is in original or compatible MacBook screens.

4. Can the repairer really repair the logic board?

Many faults are not in a loose part but on the logic board: a charging chip, a supply voltage, corrosion after liquid. Some shops only swap parts or modules, others can also work on the board itself. Ask what yours does, especially for a Mac that will not turn on or after liquid, and what happens if it does not work out. You can read more about what that involves on MacBook motherboard repair.

5. What happens to your data?

Your MacBook holds photos, work and passwords. A good repairer asks you to make a backup before you come by and says honestly that some repairs can cost you your data. Ask whether your password is needed and whether that can be limited, for example with a separate user account. What you can prepare yourself is in preparing your MacBook for a repair.

6. Do you get an honest answer when it is uncertain?

With liquid damage and some logic board faults nobody can guarantee that a repair will work. A good repairer says so beforehand, gives the chance and lets you choose. Be careful with anyone who promises everything.

7. What is the warranty on the repair, and on what?

Ask what the warranty covers: which part, for how long and under what conditions. Have it confirmed in writing, so you know where you stand if something goes wrong later.

8. How practical is it?

  • Location and reachability. Can you come by, and is there someone who answers your phone or e-mail?
  • Collection or posting. With us you can have your MacBook collected and delivered in Amsterdam or send it by post; see pickup and delivery and repair by post.
  • Clear agreements. When do you hear something, how do you get your laptop back, and what happens to parts that were replaced?

Apple or an independent repairer?

If the problem is still covered by warranty or AppleCare, look there first. If not, or if your Mac is older, an independent repairer is a good option. How to weigh that is in AppleCare or an independent repairer. And if you wonder whether repairing still makes sense, look at repairing or buying a new MacBook.
