Getting your MacBook repaired in Amsterdam: how to prepare

What to do before you bring your MacBook to a repairer: a backup, your cover, Find My Mac, your password and what to write down.

Getting your MacBook repaired in Amsterdam: how to prepare

A few things done beforehand make a MacBook repair safer and quicker. It is mostly about your data: you do not want to lose it, and you do not want to share it unnecessarily. Below is a checklist for when you have your MacBook repaired in Amsterdam, with us or with someone else.

Blue Apple repairs MacBooks at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. How a repair with us goes you can read in MacBook repair in Amsterdam: how it works.

1. Make a backup

This is the most important step. Some repairs, such as on the logic board or the storage, can cost you your data, and with liquid damage nothing is certain. Use Time Machine with an external drive (System Settings, General, Time Machine) and check that the backup worked. iCloud keeps a lot but not everything on your Mac, so do not treat it as a full backup.

If your MacBook no longer starts up, you cannot make a backup. Tell your repairer before anything is erased or reinstalled; sometimes there are ways to rescue files. See data recovery from a dead iPhone or MacBook and MacBook data recovery.

2. Check your cover

If your problem falls under warranty, AppleCare or an insurance, that can save money or trouble. Always look there first; how to weigh it is in AppleCare or an independent repairer.

3. Ask whether Find My Mac has to be off

Find My Mac and the related activation lock tie your MacBook to your Apple account. With some repairs, for example on the logic board or when reinstalling macOS, that can block a repairer. Ask beforehand whether it has to be off and keep your Apple account details at hand. You turn it off in System Settings, your name, iCloud.

4. Think about your password

To test a Mac it often has to be started up, and that needs a password. If you do not want a repairer to be able to get at your personal files, create a separate user account without your own data (System Settings, Users and Groups) and give only that. If FileVault is on, a user's password is needed at startup. Discuss with your repairer what is needed and what is not.

5. Write down what is going on

  • What does it do or not do? What do you see on screen, what do you hear?
  • Since when? And what happened just before: a fall, liquid, an update, a different charger?
  • What have you tried? For example a restart, safe mode or another charger.
  • Your serial number. You find it in About This Mac and on the bottom of the device.
  • Photos or a short video of the problem, especially if it happens sometimes and not always.

6. Bring what is needed

If you have a charging problem, bring your charger and cable: we test those too. Nothing else is needed. Take off USB sticks, adapters and cases; they can get in the way of a repair.

7. Make sure you can be reached

Your MacBook will be away for a while. Make sure the files you need are somewhere else, and let your repairer know how to reach you with questions.

After the repair: check your MacBook

When you collect it, or straight after delivery, go through a short list: does it start, do the keyboard and trackpad work, does it charge, do the ports, the screen, the sound and the camera work, and can you find your files? If you notice anything, report it straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to erase my MacBook before a repair?

Usually not. Erasing is only needed if your repairer asks for it or you want it yourself. Make a backup first in any case.

Can you see my data?

For a diagnosis a Mac often has to be started up. What that requires you discuss beforehand; a separate user account limits what can be seen. You can discuss that with us beforehand.

What if my MacBook no longer starts up?

Then you cannot make a backup and the first step is to find out whether the storage can still be read. Read MacBook will not start up.

Can I have my MacBook collected in Amsterdam?
