A port that sits on the board
A console's HDMI port is not on a separate cable but soldered to the motherboard. When the cable gets pulled, the console falls with the cable plugged in, or the plug is left hanging at an angle, the contacts break or the pins inside the port bend. Sometimes the chip behind the port, which drives the video signal, is hit as well. We desolder the old port, fit a new one and then measure that the signal comes through cleanly. That is why this is workshop work: you leave the console with us.
HDMI port, heat and the disc tray
With consoles we see the same three things over and over. The HDMI port gets damaged by a cable left in at an angle or yanked out — the picture then stays black while the console otherwise boots normally, and that port is soldered to the board. The second is heat: after a few years the cooler is packed with dust and the thermal paste has dried out, so the console runs loud, throttles or shuts itself down. Cleaning and fresh paste usually settle that. The third is a disc tray that will no longer take a disc or eject one. Which of them it is, we find out for free before quoting a price.
Frequently asked questions about PS5 and PS4 HDMI port repair
How do I know it is the port?
First try another HDMI cable and another input on your TV or monitor. If the console starts up but the picture stays away with every cable, the port or the chip behind it is the likely cause. If you can see bent or pushed-in pins in the port, it is almost certain.
What does the diagnosis cost?
Nothing. We establish what is wrong and call you with the outcome and the price. We only start once you agree, and if you decide against the repair you are under no obligation.
Will my games and storage be kept?
A port repair does not touch the storage. Your games, your account and your saved progress are all still there afterwards.
How do I stop it happening again?
Do not run the cable taut or under tension to the TV, never pull the plug out by the cable, and do not put the console where it can fall or be knocked. A flexible cable with some slack prevents most of the damage.
