Repairing your PlayStation 4 Pro

What tends to go wrong on this device, what each repair involves, and what to do before you bring it in. Prices for your model are in the list above.

What is your PlayStation 4 Pro doing?

Find the symptom that matches and it will take you to the repair that answers it. Not sure? The diagnosis is free, so you do not have to work it out yourself.

What each repair involves

Power supply / adapter — PlayStation 4 Pro Price on request

Adapters and their cables fail more often than the devices they charge, usually at the strain relief where they are bent every day. It is the cheapest thing in the chain to test and the cheapest to replace, which is why it is worth testing before anything is opened.

You might notice

  • It will not charge with its own adapter
  • The adapter gets hot or makes a noise
  • The cable only works in one position

What we check first

Your adapter and cable against ones we know are good, and the device against both. That establishes in a few minutes whether you need a repair at all.

Tested before you get it back

Charging with the replacement · The device draws the current it should

Controller repair — PlayStation 4 Pro € 55,20

Drift comes from a worn sensor in the stick with dirt in it, and it is wear rather than anything you did. Cleaning sometimes buys time, but once the drift comes back the part is finished and the stick is replaced — which is a good deal cheaper than a new controller.

You might notice

  • The character moves while you are not touching the stick
  • A button needs pressing hard
  • The controller disconnects during play

What we check first

Which stick or button is at fault, whether it is drift or a dead zone, and whether the battery still holds a charge.

Tested before you get it back

Both sticks across their full range · Every button and trigger · The controller holds its connection

HDMI port — PlayStation 4 Pro € 95,00

The HDMI port is soldered to the board, and a cable left in at an angle or yanked out breaks the contacts or the chip behind them. The giveaway is a console that otherwise boots normally — you can hear it working with nothing on screen. Good news, in a way: the port replaces on its own and the board stays in the machine, so your storage and your account stay as they are.

You might notice

  • It starts up but there is no picture
  • The picture flickers or drops out
  • The cable has to be wiggled

What we check first

Another cable and another input on the television first, to rule the easy things out, then the port and the chip behind it.

Tested before you get it back

Picture and sound through the repaired port · It holds through a restart · The port grips the cable

Disk drive / Blu-ray — PlayStation 4 Pro Price on request

The loading mechanism wears and collects dust, and the laser assembly that reads the disc has a life of its own. Both are known faults on consoles of a certain age, and both are usually fixable without touching anything else in the machine.

You might notice

  • It will not take a disc
  • It will not eject
  • It takes the disc and does not read it

What we check first

Whether the fault is the mechanism, the drive or the disc itself, and whether the drive is recognised by the console at all.

Tested before you get it back

Loading and ejecting several discs · A game reads and runs

Logic board — PlayStation 4 Pro € 199,00

Most workshops swap complete assemblies and send a board fault somewhere else. We measure the board, trace the failure to the component causing it and replace that — a shorted power rail after liquid, a burnt-out charging chip after a bad adapter, a damaged backlight circuit that leaves you reading the screen by torchlight. It is soldering under a microscope on parts the size of a grain of sand and it takes longer than anything else here. What it buys you is that your own board stays in the device, and with it, usually, your data.

You might notice

  • It shows no sign of life
  • It will not charge and a new battery did not help
  • The screen stays black but you can hear it running
  • It restarts on its own or gets very hot

What we check first

Whether power is arriving and where it stops, before anything is said about the board — a dead battery, a broken port and a failed screen all look identical from the outside, and all are cheaper.

Tested before you get it back

It starts and stays running · Charging from empty · The board temperature under load · The storage is still readable

Cleaning — PlayStation 4 Pro € 49,00

Dust in a speaker mesh, lint in a charging port and a cooler full of fluff all produce complaints that look like faults. A clean is the cheapest thing on this page and it is worth trying before anything is replaced, because often enough it is the whole repair.

You might notice

  • The speakers sound muffled
  • There is dust or lint in the ports
  • It runs hotter or louder than it used to

What we check first

The ports, meshes and cooling under magnification, and whether cleaning is likely to solve it or only to help.

Tested before you get it back

Speaker and microphone clarity · Charging seats properly · Temperatures where cooling was cleaned

Before you bring it in

None of this is required — you can walk in without doing any of it. It just makes the visit shorter and, in one case, protects your device.

  1. 1 Back up if you still can, through iCloud, a computer or whatever you normally use. Most repairs leave your storage untouched, but a device that has already taken a knock is exactly the one you want a copy of.
  2. 2 Bring it charged if it still powers on. A device with some charge can be tested properly before and after the work, which saves a second visit.
  3. 3 Take off the case and any screen protector, and bring them with you rather than leaving them on.
  4. 4 If the complaint is about charging, bring your own cable and adapter. The fault is in one of those often enough that it is worth five minutes to rule them out.
  5. 5 Know your passcode, and your Apple ID or Google account details if the device asks for them. We cannot test a repair on a device nobody can unlock.

How the repair works

  1. 1

    Free diagnosis

We establish what is actually wrong rather than what it looks like, because a device that will not charge and a device that will not turn on often have the same cause and different fixes.

  2. 2

    Price and options first

You hear what it costs and, where there is a choice of part, what each one means, before anything is opened. If we think the repair is not worth it, we say so then.

  3. 3

    The repair

On a phone, most of the common jobs are done while you wait. A tablet, laptop, watch or console is left with us, and you are told at drop-off roughly how long it will be.

  4. 4

    Testing

The part we fitted is tested, and so is everything around it that the work could have disturbed.

  5. 5

    Collection

Come and get it, or have it collected and returned if you would rather not make the trip. Whatever we replaced carries a warranty, set out in our terms.

What we test before you get it back

Only the things the work could have affected. A list of everything on the device would look thorough and mean nothing.

  • Charging with the replacement
  • The device draws the current it should
  • Both sticks across their full range
  • Every button and trigger
  • The controller holds its connection
  • Picture and sound through the repaired port
  • It holds through a restart
  • The port grips the cable
  • Loading and ejecting several discs
  • A game reads and runs
  • It starts and stays running
  • Charging from empty
  • The board temperature under load
  • The storage is still readable
  • Speaker and microphone clarity
  • Charging seats properly
  • Temperatures where cooling was cleaned

Repair or replace?

Repairing usually makes sense when

  • The device works apart from the one thing that is broken.
  • A single part is at fault, and it is one that comes off on its own.
  • The repair costs a fraction of a replacement.
  • You want to keep this device, and what is on it.

Worth a diagnosis before deciding when

  • Several things are wrong at once, which often means one underlying cause.
  • Liquid has been involved, because what can be saved depends on what the board looks like inside.
  • The fault is on the board, where the work is longer and the outcome is less predictable.
  • The physical damage is extensive — a bent frame or a case that no longer closes changes what is possible.

We will not tell you to repair something that is not worth repairing. On an older device with an expensive part, the honest answer is sometimes to put the money towards a replacement, and you will hear that from us.

Why bring a PlayStation 4 Pro to Blue Apple

The price before the work

Your model has a price per repair on this page. Where a price cannot be known in advance — liquid damage, board-level faults — you get it after the free diagnosis, and it does not move afterwards.

Board-level repair

Most workshops swap whole assemblies and send a board fault elsewhere. We trace the fault to the component and replace that, which is cheaper and keeps your own board, and usually your own data, in the device.

A choice of part where one exists

Where more than one quality of screen or battery is available for your model, you choose, and you see the price of each before deciding.

An honest no

When a repair costs more than the device is worth, or the odds are poor, we tell you before you commit. The diagnosis is free either way.
