Repair at component level

Most workshops only swap complete assemblies and send you back to the manufacturer when the board is at fault. We measure the board out, trace the failure back to the component causing it and replace that part. On consoles the HDMI port is the best known: it is soldered to the board, and a bent cable breaks the contacts or the chip behind them, after which the picture stays away while the console boots normally. We also see power rails shorted by a surge or by liquid, and damage caused by a console running too hot for years. That is soldering work under a microscope on parts the size of a grain of sand, and it takes longer than any other repair. It does pay off: your own board stays in the console, and with it your storage and your account.

HDMI port, heat and the disc tray

With consoles we see the same three things over and over. The HDMI port gets damaged by a cable left in at an angle or yanked out — the picture then stays black while the console otherwise boots normally, and that port is soldered to the board. The second is heat: after a few years the cooler is packed with dust and the thermal paste has dried out, so the console runs loud, throttles or shuts itself down. Cleaning and fresh paste usually settle that. The third is a disc tray that will no longer take a disc or eject one. Which of them it is, we find out for free before quoting a price.

Frequently asked questions about PlayStation logic board repair

My console starts up but there is no picture.
That is almost always the HDMI port or the chip behind it. Try another cable and another input on the television first to rule those out. If the picture still stays away, the port is the job: it is soldered to the board and can be replaced on its own, so this does not need a new board.
What does a diagnosis cost?
Nothing. We establish what is wrong and call you with the outcome and the price. We only start once you agree. If you decide against the repair you are under no obligation, and we will say honestly whether it is still worth it.
My console is loud, throttles, or switches off while I play.
Then do not start at the board. After a few years the cooler is packed with dust and the thermal paste has gone hard, and that produces exactly these complaints. Cleaning and fresh paste is the smaller job. If the heat has already done damage on the board, that turns up when we measure it out.
Will my games and saves be kept?
Because we repair the board rather than replace it, the drive is left alone and everything is still there afterwards. We cannot guarantee it, especially not after liquid damage or a short circuit. If there are saves you cannot afford to lose, say so and we will take that into account during the repair.
