Years ago you took the hard drive out of a broken laptop and read it in another computer. On most MacBook models of recent years that no longer works. The storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted with a key that only exists inside that machine's own security chip, so reading the chip on its own gives you nothing usable. The only way to your files is to get the original board working again. That is exactly what we do: we trace the fault at component level, repair it under the microscope and start the machine up again. Then we copy your data to an external drive or a new computer.
On recent MacBooks the keyboard, trackpad and battery are riveted into the top case. Convenient for the factory; for a repair it means a single dead key could in theory cost you the whole assembly. So we work at part level where we can rather than swapping the case as a unit. The same goes for the logic board: where many workshops write a board off, we measure it out and replace the component causing the fault. If your model has a Touch ID sensor, it is paired to the board, so it keeps working through a board repair — but not through a board replacement, and we tell you that up front.
