The iPhone 12 range, from 2020, changed the shape of the iPhone to flat edges, put an OLED display in every model and added the MagSafe magnets on the back. Six years later, the batteries are tired and a good many have a cracked back or a worn port, but the phones themselves are still very usable.

What is different about the iPhone 12 series
- OLED on every model. The 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max all have OLED displays under Ceramic Shield glass, which Apple introduced with this range.
- Flat edges and a glass back. The flat frame is stainless steel on the Pro models and aluminium on the others. The glass back is the first thing to crack in a fall onto a hard floor.
- MagSafe on the back. The magnets and the wireless charging coil sit behind the back glass. A cracked back is therefore more than cosmetic if it affects charging.
- Lightning port. The 12 range still charges over Lightning, which collects lint and is behind many "will not charge" visits.
What usually goes wrong with the iPhone 12 series
- Battery that no longer lasts. The most common repair on a phone of this age. The mini, with its small battery, tends to be first.
- Cracked back glass. A hit on the flat back or a fall off a table. It is a repair of its own and the model page shows it.
- Cracked screen. Ceramic Shield resists scratches and impacts better than earlier glass, but a hard corner fall still cracks it.
- Earpiece that is quiet or silent. Calls that are hard to hear while the loudspeaker is fine: the earpiece speaker, its mesh or its connection.
- Water damage. The 12 is water resistant, not waterproof. After six years the seals are no longer what they were.

Repair or replace?
A repair on an iPhone 12 is usually worth it, because a battery or a back glass costs far less than the cheapest new iPhone. A phone with a failing logic board and a cracked screen at the same time is where we say honestly that the repair would cost more than it is worth.
Looking after your iPhone
- Replace the battery before the phone becomes a chore. A new battery is the biggest improvement you can make to a phone of this age.
- Keep it out of back pockets. Pressure on a glass back is how it cracks without a fall.
- Do not put it on a MagSafe charger in a case with metal. It heats the phone and the battery.
