The Galaxy A5x and A7x are the phones many people buy when they want a proper screen and a good camera without paying for an S-series. They are well-made and sell in large numbers, which means a lot of them come in for the same few repairs, and a few of them are worth a repair that costs more than people expect.

What is different about the Galaxy A7x and A5x series
- A real AMOLED screen. Most of these phones have a Super AMOLED display with a fast refresh rate. It is a better and more expensive part than the screen on the cheaper A-series, which shows in the repair.
- Water resistance on the newer ones. The A52 and later are rated IP67. It is a protection against splashes and brief dips that weakens after a drop.
- Glass or plastic, depending on the model. Some A5x phones have a glass back and a metal frame, others a plastic one. The model page shows which yours has.
- USB-C and a big battery. They charge over USB-C and have large batteries that last well, at least until they do not.
What usually goes wrong with the Galaxy A5x and A7x
- Cracked screen. The most common repair. A Super AMOLED screen costs more than an LCD, and the model page shows the options for your phone.
- Battery that has faded. On the A51 and A71 from 2019 and 2020, a new battery brings back a day of use.
- Charging port faults. A loose or dirty USB-C port, or a cable that has worn it.
- Cracked back. On glass-backed models a hard fall breaks it; on plastic ones it scuffs and cracks at the corners.
- Water damage. Resistance is not waterproofing. A phone that went in water should be switched off.

Repair or replace?
Repair has to be in proportion on a phone of this price. A battery or a charging port is usually a sound repair. A cracked AMOLED screen on an old A51 may cost more than the phone is worth on the second-hand market, and we say so after the diagnosis. On a recent A55 or A56, a screen is well worth doing.
Looking after your Galaxy A
- Use a case and a screen protector. The A-series glass is not as tough as the flagship glass.
- Do not charge overnight every night. It is easier on the battery.
- Keep the port clean. Lint is the usual cause of charging trouble.
