The iPhone X was the first iPhone without a home button, and the XS and XR followed a year later. They are old phones now, and many belong to someone who just wants it to keep working. That is a very reasonable aim, and one where a battery or a screen is usually the answer.
Blue Apple repairs the iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. Each model has its own page with the repairs we offer for it: start at the iPhone repair page.
What is different about the iPhone X, XS and XR
- The first Face ID iPhones. The X, XS, XS Max and XR have no home button and unlock with Face ID. The sensors are behind the notch, and they are moved across with care when the screen is replaced.
- OLED on three, LCD on the XR. The X, XS and XS Max have OLED screens, the XR has an LCD. Older OLEDs can show a faint ghost image after years of the same icons.
- Steel on the X and XS, aluminium on the XR. The X, XS and XS Max have a stainless-steel frame, the XR aluminium, and all have a glass back.
- Software support is running out. Apple does not give the oldest models in this family the newest iOS. Check what yours can run before you decide how much to spend on it.
What usually goes wrong with the iPhone X, XS and XR
- Battery that is worn out. On a phone of this age the battery is the first thing to look at, and a new one makes a big difference.
- Cracked screen. The most common repair after the battery. The OLED and LCD models use different parts.
- Face ID that stops working. After a drop, or moisture, or a poorly done screen repair. We check the sensors before and after.
- Earpiece or microphone faults. Calls that are quiet, or a microphone that does not pick up your voice.
- Water damage. The seals of a phone this old are well past their best.

Repair or replace?
For a phone that is still running well, a battery or a screen is worth it, because it can give it a few more years. If the phone no longer gets updates and has several faults at once, we say honestly after the diagnosis that the money is better kept for a newer phone.
Looking after your iPhone
- Back up before it fails. On an old phone a fault can arrive without warning.
- Avoid leaving the same image on screen for hours. It slows the ghosting on an older OLED.
- Replace the battery before it swells. A swollen battery lifts the screen and should not be charged.

Questions about repairing an iPhone X, XS or XR
Can a failed Face ID be repaired?
Sometimes. It depends on what failed, and we tell you after the diagnosis. The sensors are paired to the phone, so it is not a simple swap.
Is it worth repairing an iPhone X?
If it runs well and you like it, a battery is a modest cost. If the screen is also cracked and the phone is stuck on an old iOS, we say what is sensible.
