A Ledger that will not connect, charge or show anything is stressful. What usually fails, what a repair can and cannot do, and what to check first.

Ledger repair in Amsterdam: Nano S, Nano X, Stax and Flex

A Ledger that suddenly will not connect, show anything or hold a charge is stressful, because of what it protects. The useful thing to know is that the device and the funds are separate: your coins live on the blockchain, and the Ledger only holds the keys, which can be restored from your recovery phrase. That changes how you should think about a repair.

Blue Apple repairs Ledger hardware wallets at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. Every model has its own page with the repairs we offer for it: start at the Ledger repair page.

What usually goes wrong with Ledger hardware wallets

  • USB port worn or loose. By far the most common failure. The connector is plugged in and pulled out for years, and on the Nano S (micro-USB), Nano S Plus and Nano X (USB-C) a worn port first shows up as a cable that only works at an angle, then as a wallet that will not connect at all.
  • Screen shows nothing, or lines and missing pixels. Usually after a drop, or pressure from a pocket or bag. The device can still be running underneath, so a dark screen is not automatically the end of the wallet.
  • Buttons that do not respond. On the Nano models the two buttons confirm every action. Worn or dirty buttons, or a contact that has lifted off the board, make the wallet unusable even though it powers up.
  • Nano X battery no longer holds a charge. The Nano X has a small built-in battery for Bluetooth. After a few years it runs flat quickly, or the wallet only works while it is plugged in.
  • Water or moisture damage. A pocket in the rain, a spill in a bag. Corrosion on the board keeps going after the device has dried, so the sooner it is looked at, the better the odds.

Repair or replace?

Here is the honest comparison. If you still have your recovery phrase (usually 24 words), buying a new device and restoring the phrase onto it is almost always quicker and often cheaper than a repair. A repair makes sense when you no longer have the phrase and the device is your only way in: then opening it carefully is all that matters. We cannot recover keys that are gone, and we will say so before you pay for anything.

Looking after your Ledger

  • Keep the recovery phrase offline. Never photograph it, never type it into a website or app, and never give it to anyone who calls you, including a repair shop. We will never ask for it.
  • Plug in straight, with a good cable. Do not let the wallet hang from a long cable or hub, and pull on the plug rather than the cable when you disconnect.
  • Protect the screen and buttons. A small case or the original box beats a loose pocket with keys and coins.
  • Charge a Nano X now and then. A lithium battery that sits empty for months ages faster. Connect it for a while every few months.

Questions about Ledger repair

Will you need my recovery phrase to repair my Ledger?

No, never. We do not ask for it and do not want to see it, and a repair of the hardware does not need it. Anyone who asks for it, for any reason, should be refused.

Can you get my crypto back if the Ledger is dead?

The coins are not in the device. With your recovery phrase you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger or another compatible wallet. If the phrase is lost and the device does not work, a hardware repair may get it working again; we cannot reconstruct keys that are gone.

In short

Check first whether you still have your recovery phrase: if you do, you have more choices than you think, and if you do not, a careful hardware repair may be the only way back in. See the Ledger repair page for the models and repairs, or send us a request. You will find us at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam, and you can call 020 239 11 93 with a question first.
