The big Intel MacBook Pro was the machine for video, design and development before the Apple-chip models, and many are still in use. They run hot, have fans that fill with dust, and the models in the middle of the range have a keyboard with a history. That makes the list of faults a particular one.
Blue Apple repairs the 15 and 16 inch Intel MacBook Pro from 2012 to 2019 at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. Each model has its own page with the repairs we offer for it: start at the MacBook repair page.
What is different about the MacBook Pro 15 and 16 inch (Intel)
- A hot laptop with fans. The 15 and 16 inch Pros have powerful chips and graphics, so they run hot and the fans work hard. Dust makes it worse.
- A screen coating that wears. The 2012 to 2015 Retina models are known for a coating on the display that wears off in patches, leaving marks.
- The butterfly keyboard on 2016 to 2019 models. The 15 inch models from 2016 to 2019 share the butterfly keyboard with the 13 inch, and its known failures. The 16 inch of 2019 returned to a more reliable design.
- Intel, and the end of macOS support. These Macs have Intel chips. Apple has stopped giving the newest macOS to the older ones, so check what yours can run.
What usually goes wrong with the 15 and 16 inch Intel MacBook Pro
- Fan noise and overheating. A loud laptop that gets hot and throttles. A clean of the fans and fresh thermal paste often brings it back.
- Battery that has swollen or faded. On a laptop of this age, a swollen battery lifts the trackpad and the case. Do not charge it.
- Screen with a worn coating or damage. Patches on a Retina display, or a crack or backlight fault.
- Keyboard that sticks or repeats. On the butterfly models, keys that stick or double-type.
- Does not turn on, or no picture. A charger or port fault, or a failing graphics chip or board. We measure where it stops.

Repair or replace?
An Intel MacBook Pro of this size is worth repairing if it still does the job you need it for: a battery, a screen or a fan clean is a modest cost. If the board or the graphics chip has failed, the repair may cost more than the laptop is worth, and we say so after the diagnosis. If the data matters, tell us first.
Looking after your MacBook Pro
- Clean the fans. Every year on a laptop that works hard.
- Do not use it on a bed. It blocks the vents and the laptop overheats.
- Back up before it fails. A failing board does not give a second chance.

Questions about 15 and 16 inch Intel MacBook Pro repair
Can the screen coating of a 2015 MacBook Pro be fixed?
The marks are in the coating, not the glass. A new display fixes it, and the model page shows what we offer for yours.
Is it worth repairing a 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro?
Usually yes: it is a capable machine with a good keyboard. We say what the repair costs after the diagnosis.
