A projector has a short list of parts that do the hard work, a light source, a cooling system and a processing board, and most faults are one of them. Some of those parts are safe for the user to replace, some are not, and the honest answer to a projector fault starts with working out which kind you have.
Blue Apple repairs projectors in Amsterdam. The projectors page lists the brands we work with, what typical repairs cost and how to send us a request.
What usually goes wrong with projectors
- Lamp or laser light source failure. A lamp that has reached the end of its hours, a dim or discoloured picture, or a laser module that no longer produces its full output.
- Fan failure or thermal shutdown. A projector that overheats and turns itself off, with fans that are loud or have stopped.
- Power supply fault. A projector that will not start, or switches off the moment the lamp or laser should ignite.
- Colour wheel, optics or lens fault. A rainbow effect, a colour cast, a lens that will not focus or shift, or dust inside the optical path.
- HDMI or input board fault. A picture that drops, flickers or never appears on one input.
- Image processing board fault. Missing colours, lines or a picture that is wrong while the light source is fine.

Repair or replace?
A lamp is cheap and in many projectors a job for the owner, so check your manual first. A laser light source, a board or a lens assembly in a good projector is a bigger repair, but usually still far below the price of a new projector. Laser and lamp light sources can be hazardous, so we only accept units that we can service safely, and we say so openly.
Looking after your projector
- Clean the filter and the vents. Dust is the main cause of overheating and of a dim picture.
- Let it cool before switching off at the wall. Cutting power while the fan is still running shortens the life of the lamp.
- Replace a lamp when it reaches its hours. A lamp that is far past its life can fail dramatically.
