Network hardware is installed once and forgotten until it fails, which is why its faults are usually power, ports and fans: the parts that run continuously. A switch or a firewall often costs more than the repair, and replacing it also means rebuilding its configuration, so repair is worth considering for good equipment.
Blue Apple repairs network equipment in Amsterdam. The network equipment page lists the brands we work with, what typical repairs cost and how to send us a request.
What usually goes wrong with network equipment
- Will not power on or keeps restarting. A dead switch or a firewall that reboots in a loop points at the power supply, an adapter or the mainboard.
- Ethernet or fibre port faults. Ports that no longer link, flap or sit at the wrong speed, with cables and modules that work elsewhere.
- PoE circuit faults. A switch whose PoE ports no longer power cameras, phones or access points, while data still flows.
- Fan failure and overheating. A failed fan shows as an alarm, throttling or a shutdown.
- Mainboard faults. A device that powers on but never reaches a working state.

Repair or replace?
Good network equipment is usually worth repairing, particularly managed switches, firewalls and controllers, where the configuration and licences are tied to the device. This is hardware repair only: configuration, licences and security policy are not part of it. Keep a copy of the configuration before the device comes in.
Looking after your switch or firewall
- Back up the configuration. A repaired device is only useful if you can restore its settings.
- Keep it ventilated and dust-free. Fans and heat are what fail in a rack.
- Use a UPS or surge protection. A power spike is how many network devices die.
