A Galaxy Z Flip is a normal-sized phone that folds in half to fit in a pocket. That is what people like about it, and it is also what gives it the faults of a folding phone: a screen that bends, a hinge that works hundreds of times a day, and a small cover display on the outside that takes the knocks.

What is different about the Galaxy Z Flip
- A folding screen with a crease. The inner display is a flexible panel under a protective film. A faint crease along the fold is normal; a line, a dark patch or a bubbling film is not.
- A cover display on the outside. The Flip has a small display on the outer half. It started as a tiny window on the original Flip and has grown with every model, and it is a separate part with its own glass.
- A hinge you use all day. The hinge opens and closes far more often than any other phone part, so it is the second thing to wear after the screen.
- Smaller than a Fold, with the same parts. The Flip is cheaper than a Fold, but its screen and hinge are repaired in the same way, with the same care.
What usually goes wrong with the Galaxy Z Flip
- Inner screen damaged. A line through the display, a black patch or a pressure mark. It is the most common and the most costly repair on a Flip.
- Protective film peeling. The film lifts at the edges or bubbles. It belongs to the display and is repaired, not peeled off.
- Cover display cracked. A drop on the outer screen cracks it. It is a smaller repair than the inner screen.
- Hinge that is rough or loose. A fold that grinds, clicks or no longer holds at an angle.
- Battery that is tired. A Flip that needs charging twice a day, particularly on the older models.

Repair or replace?
A recent Flip with a cracked cover display or a worn battery is worth repairing. For an older Flip with a damaged inner screen, the comparison is closer, and we say honestly after the diagnosis whether the repair is in proportion. Samsung's own repair programmes and warranty are worth a look first on a new one.
Looking after your Galaxy Z Flip
- Do not press the folding screen with a nail. Pressure marks are the usual reason the inner display fails.
- Do not peel the film. It is part of the display.
- Close it gently and keep sand out of the hinge. Grit is what wears a hinge.
