A headset is worn on the face, plugged into a PC or charged every few days, and carried in a bag, so its faults are the faults of any heavily handled gadget: ports, batteries, sensors and controllers. They are also more repairable than they look, because most of the failures are a single part.
Blue Apple repairs VR and mixed-reality headsets in Amsterdam. The VR and spatial computing page lists the brands we work with, what typical repairs cost and how to send us a request.
What usually goes wrong with VR and mixed-reality headsets
- USB-C or charging port fault. A headset that will not charge, or a link cable that no longer connects, has a worn port.
- Worn or swollen battery. Playing time that has dropped sharply, or a headset that shuts down. A swollen battery should be replaced rather than charged.
- Tracking sensor or camera fault. A headset that loses tracking, shows a drifting world or warns about its cameras can have a dirty lens or a failing camera.
- Fan or cooling fault. A headset that runs hot, throttles or has a fan that rattles.
- Display or lens fault. A scratched or cracked lens, a dead pixel patch or a screen that flickers.
- Controller buttons or thumbsticks. Sticks that drift, or buttons that stick or do not register.
Brands and models we look at
These are the headset brands we list, and some of the models with their own pages, each with an estimate of what a typical repair costs.
Brands: Apple Vision Pro, HTC Vive, Meta, Varjo, Pimax, Magic Leap, Microsoft.
Popular models: Meta Quest 3 (512 GB), Apple Vision Pro, HTC VIVE Focus Vision, HTC VIVE XR Elite, Pimax Crystal Light, Varjo Aero, Magic Leap 2, Microsoft HoloLens 2.
Repair or replace?
A premium headset such as a Vision Pro, a Varjo or a Vive Focus Vision is expensive to replace, and a port, a battery or a controller stick costs far less. A cheaper headset with several faults at once is where replacing starts to make sense, and we tell you after the diagnosis.
Looking after your headset
- Clean the lenses with a microfibre cloth only. Never wipe a dry lens with tissue; it scratches.
- Do not leave lenses in direct sun. Sunlight focused through the lens can burn the display.
- Charge before it is flat, and not overnight every night. It is kinder to the battery.
