Workstation repair in Amsterdam: GPU, power and cooling

A workstation that will not power on, shows no picture or shuts down under load: what usually fails on Dell Precision, HP Z, Lenovo ThinkStation and others.

Workstation repair in Amsterdam: GPU, power and cooling

A workstation is the machine a designer, engineer or editor does their income on, so the cost of it being down is higher than the cost of the repair. Faults tend to arrive under load, when the GPU, the power supply and the cooling are working hardest, and the useful skill is telling those apart quickly.

Blue Apple repairs workstations in Amsterdam. The workstations page lists the brands we work with, what typical repairs cost and how to send us a request.

What usually goes wrong with workstations

  • Will not power on. A workstation that is dead, or powers on and off in a loop, points at the power supply or the mainboard, sometimes a failed component that shorted.
  • No display or GPU artefacts. No picture, a screen that flickers, or coloured blocks and lines on screen under load: usually the graphics card, its power connection or its cooling.
  • Shuts down or restarts under load. A power supply that cannot deliver the peak current, a CPU or GPU that overheats, or a failing memory module.
  • Overheating or fan failure. Fans that run flat out, a machine that throttles, or temperatures that climb after a few minutes.
  • Drive not detected, or memory errors. A drive that disappears from the system, or errors and crashes that trace back to a memory module.

Repair or replace?

A workstation is usually worth repairing: a power supply, a graphics card or a mainboard costs less than replacing the whole machine, and your configuration and licences stay as they are. We tell you after the diagnosis which part has failed and what a repair costs.

Looking after your workstation

  • Clean the dust filters and fans. Dust is the cause of most overheating.
  • Do not run the power supply at its limit. Add up the power draw before adding a second GPU.
  • Keep a backup. A failing drive or board does not warn you.
