Cozmo and Vector were small companion robots with big personalities, and the people who still own them tend to be fond of them. Anki, the company that made them, closed in 2019, so repairs are not available from the maker, and the hardware inside is the part that wears.
Blue Apple looks at Anki companion robots at Rijnstraat 76-H in Amsterdam. The Anki repair page shows what a typical repair costs per model; the final price is confirmed in writing after the diagnosis.
What usually goes wrong with Anki companion robots
- Lift or arm that does not move. The lift arm is driven by small gears and a motor that wear or strip, particularly on Cozmo, which spends its life lifting cubes.
- Treads or wheels that slip. Worn or stretched treads, or a drive gear, make the robot drive crooked or not at all.
- Battery that will not charge. The battery ages, and a swollen battery should be replaced rather than charged.
- Charging contacts and charger. A robot that does not charge can have dirty or worn contacts, or a charger that has failed.
- Screen or face that stays dark. The display can fail from a knock, a loose cable or moisture.
The Anki models we repair
Every model below has its own page, with an estimate of what a typical repair costs.
Repair or replace?
A repair is worthwhile to the people who want their robot back, since they are no longer sold new. We tell you after the diagnosis what is possible and what it costs. Software is separate: Digital Dream Labs took over the product, and we repair the hardware.
Looking after your robot
- Keep the robot on its charger when not in use. Left flat for months, the battery suffers.
- Clean the charging contacts. A dry cloth keeps them reliable.
- Keep it off table edges. Cozmo and Vector are tough, but a fall to a hard floor is the end of many.
