The Pixel 5 and 6 are four to six years old, which makes them phones that many people are still happily using and, because of that, phones where a battery or a screen comes up often. They are also phones from before Google stretched its software support, so the age matters to the answer.

What is different about the Pixel 6 and 5
- The Pixel 5 is a different phone. The Pixel 5 has an aluminium body with a coating and a smaller display. It is a very different phone from the Pixel 6, and its parts are different too.
- The first Tensor phones. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were the first with Google's own Tensor chip, with a camera bar across the back and a fingerprint sensor under the display.
- The 6a is the cheaper one. The Pixel 6a is the smaller, cheaper version, with a simpler body.
- Software support has an end. Google has stopped or will soon stop updating the oldest of these. Check what yours receives before you decide how much to spend.
What usually goes wrong with the Pixel 6 and 5
- Battery that no longer lasts. The most common repair. On a phone of this age a new battery brings back a day of use.
- Cracked screen. The model page shows the options for your Pixel and what each costs.
- Charging port faults. A loose or dirty USB-C port.
- Fingerprint sensor under the display that is slow. Common on the 6 and 6 Pro. A protector or a replacement screen can affect it.
- Does not turn on. A flat or failed battery, or a fault on the board.

Repair or replace?
A battery is nearly always worth doing on a Pixel 6 or 5 that you like. A screen depends on how long the phone will still get updates and on what the repair costs against a newer phone. On a Pixel 5 with several faults at once, we say honestly after the diagnosis that the money may be better kept.
Looking after your Pixel
- Replace the battery before it swells. An old battery that swells lifts the screen.
- Back up the photos. Old phones fail without warning.
- Use a thin protector over the fingerprint sensor. A thick one makes it slow.
